Officine Alfieri Maserati – Your Maserati, Your Way
Almost limitless choices mean every Maserati can be ‘one of a kind’

These days, almost every auto manufacturer offers customers some choice on configuring a new car. Paint color, interior materials, perhaps even optional wheels, may be on offer. At Maserati, the choices go far beyond such limitations to offer a staggering number of potential combinations, running into millions. For us, the customer is always right – and for you, this means that your Maserati can be truly unique.

The program has the interesting name of ‘Officine Alfieri Maserati’ – interesting, because it harkens right back to the earliest days of the company. It was in 1914 that the very first Maserati company was formed, with the rather unwieldy name ‘Societa Anonime Officine Alfieri Maserati’. It was named after the most active and innovative of the Maserati brothers, Alfieri; unfortunately the first World War intervened, and saw the company working on spark plugs and aero engines.

Right from Maserati’s earliest days producing dedicated road cars, there were variations which helped ensure the client’s requirements were suited exactly. For example there were sixteen iterations of the Tipo A6G - the 2000 Gran Turismo - built; one was a Vignale coupe, five has Spider bodies built by Frua, there was one Frua coupe and the rest were all Pinin Farina coupes. The trend continued through the 3500 GT, where Frua, Touring, Vignale and Allemano all built versions of the car.

The practice reached its zenith with the 5000 GT. The story behind its creation has reached almost mythic proportions – the story goes that the Shah of Persia was touring the Maserati factory when he came across some unused V8 engines which had been intended for the mighty 450S sports racer. The Shah inquired whether it might be possible to use one of them in a road car, and the factory modified a 3500 GT chassis to suit. With the motor taken out to five liters, performance was breathtaking – and the cream of society came calling, each demanding their own version of the car.

Having coachbuilders – carrozzeria, in Italian – making bespoke bodies on a standard chassis has long since ceased to be standard practice, but Maserati has long offered a multitude of choices to customers. In 2000, the company decided to give the program a name – and Officine Alfieri Maserati was reborn.

Since each car is hand-built by skilled technicians, the factory has the capability to show an extraordinary degree of flexibility when it comes to personalization. There are all the options a customer would expect – a range of bodywork colors, different wheels and so on. For the interior, the choices multiply – dashboard, seats, steering wheel, piping, headlining and carpets can all be different colors.

For the most exacting requirements, the factory can go beyond the standard choices, and will do all they can to meet a client’s requirements. Provide a color sample or a swatch of material, and the experts in Modena will do their utmost to provide a match. Whatever the request, the Officine Alfiere Maserati program means it will receive thorough consideration.

You can explore the tremendous range of options available by trying the car configurator through the Maserati North America web site. Contact your local authorized Maserati dealer for further details of the Officine Alfieri Maserati program.
